Things to Do (Besides the Harbor)

I%26#39;m going to be in the Baltimore area for about 4 months b/c of work, so I%26#39;m going to need to do more than the Harbor. What other areas are there to see, places to eat, things to do? Where are some of the great historical areas of Baltimore? I know I%26#39;ll hit a bunch of O%26#39;s games and make a trip or two to Annapolis, but what are some other things to do?

THANKS!

Things to Do (Besides the Harbor)

Well, there%26#39;s a little city called Washington DC down the road about 40 miles that might hold your interest for a couple of days. :)

Otherwise, if you let us know your interests and the type of food that you enjoy it would be easier to answer the ';places to eat, things to do'; part of your question.

The Atlantic Ocean beaches (Rehobeth, Ocean City, Bethany, etc) are about 2.5 or 3 hours away. Philadelphia and New York City are an easy train ride if you want to check those out for a day or overnight visit. Atlantic City is about 3 hours drive if you%26#39;re into gambling...

Things to Do (Besides the Harbor)

I agree with Irishfan. Knowing your interests would help considerably in what to recommend. For example, if you like live theater, there is the Lyric Opera House and Hippodrome Theater. If you like renaissance stuff AND you%26#39;ll still in Baltimore around late August, you could see the Maryland Renaissance Festival in Crownsville.

the walters art gallery is terrific - and located in the Mt. Vernon area, which IMO is one of the most beautiful urban neighborhoods anywhere. the baltimore museum of art is excellent, too.

%26amp; since you like baseball, the ';sports legends at camden yards'; museum %26amp; the babe ruth house might appeal to you.

probably Fort McHenry is the most historically significant site...

there are lots of beautiful areas for hiking, bird-watching %26amp; stuff, if you like that....

tell us more about what interests you, %26amp; we%26#39;ll have more ideas!

If you history you could do day trips Gettysburg, Antietam, and Harper%26#39;s Ferry. These are all very nice battlefields located not too far rom Baltimore.

If you are looking for thrills you could head up to Hershey, Pa. Hershey Park has a couple of great coasters, and they opening a new mini-waterpark this year.

OK interests...

Well, I like baseball, but we%26#39;ve established that. What else...I%26#39;m not into the big chain stores and restaraunts (like Inner Harbor has). I like antiques and outdoorsy things (hiking, kayaking - not so much sailing), art, theater and anything historical (U.S. Colonial and Revolutionary periods). As for restaraunts I much prefer local haunts to chains (any great steak house suggestions??)

Thanks guys and gals!

A nice afternoon could be spent in historic Ellicott City which is about 15 min. from downtown. All along Main St are many antigue stores, an old bookstore, an antique beer and wine store, small cafes, etc. You don%26#39;t say what your price range is for steak, but there is a very pricey[ but really good} steak house there- Jordan%26#39;s . They have music there on the WE- jazz mostly I think. I have an aquaintance who sings there about once a month. It sits on the Patapsco River so you can enjoy walking along the small bridge there. There is a small B+ O Railroad museum there. [ not at all like the great one in downtown Baltimore}. Would you be renting a car?- The forementioned Antietam would be right up your alley- fantastic trip.!!!! You could easily spend all day there. Gettysburg too!! You could go to Maryland%26#39;s Eastern shore and visit St Michaels and Oxford- great restaurants, Maritime Museum, shopping, biking, and enjoying the Chesapeake Bay. Assateague Island would also be a good trip- about 3 hours from Baltimore- but could defin. canoe, kyak, sightsee, enjoy the beach, bike, clam, fish, and see the wild ponies. By the way in Baltimore- try Mortons Steakhouse and of course Ruths Christ Steakhouse is also there.

All great suggestions! Along with Gettysburg I would also add Fort McHenry and the Constelation, both at he harbor, sorry! What area are you staying in?

there are still some antique stores on howard street in downtown baltimore...known as ';antique row';....i was just downtown for a funeral today %26amp; saw signs pointing toward ';antique row'; .

for hiking...i%26#39;d recommend gunpowder falls state park....especially near the prettyboy dam area. it%26#39;s a beautiful river gorge....and not far at all!

Havre De Grace in Harford County is a great day trip from Baltimore.

There are quaint restaurants on the water, parks, and antique stores. It%26#39;s about an hour ride from downtown Baltimore.
