I am vacationing with my best friend in Ocean City again this summer. this year we want to be on the beach in one of those smaller motels (the sort of bohemian ones) with a balcony or outdoor area to sit out at night and see the ocean. It seems like all the motels on the internet are the huge ones that are mostly for families, but we don%26#39;t want to be in those ';resorty'; type places this year. Any advice on how to find those more obscure hotels?

Small oceanfront motels
The Ocean Mecca is always a good choice. It is very clean and well maintained, as well as affordably priced. The place that came to my mind when I read your post was the Santa Maria, which no longer exists. The motel was torn down and was supposed to be replaced with a condo building, but the plans fell through. A 5-story Courtyard by Marriott is going to be built on the site instead, with the top floor consisting of condo units. Besides the Ocean Mecca, I can%26#39;t think of any other small oceanfront motels to recommend (either they no longer exist or still exist and have seen their better days).
You might want to check out this http://www.beachwalkhotel.com/index.htm
It%26#39;s not directly on the beach but is one building off the boardwalk at 11th st. My wife and I stayed there last year and could see the water/beach/boardwalk fine. It is clean, has a nice porch with rocking chairs and is very quiet.
If you don%26#39;t need the frills - check out the Rideau Motel - right on the boardwalk and 1st - can%26#39;t beat the location if you want to be close to all the action. The rooms are OK with a balcony and a decent pool - but you%26#39;ll still pay 200 a night. i took pic last year - but had problems downloading to this site. I%26#39;ll try again.
Try the Flamingo on 31st. It is 2 blocks from the boardwalk. We stay there every summer. You can see the ocean from every building sitting on the balcony except if you stay in the motel efficiencies. They are very reasonably priced. They also have an indoor/outdoor pool. We sit out on the balcony every night and watch all the action. For the price and the value you get we won%26#39;t stay anywhere else in the summer. It is very clean and the staff is the best. We take the bus to the beginning of the boardwalk when we wanna go it is only 2.00 for the whole day. Definately beats the tram of 3.00 for just one way. Hope it helps.
howard johnson 24th and boardwalk. Good location.
We like the Plim Plaza, it%26#39;s around 2nd st on the boards. No balcony but it has a large porch with rocking chairs. The best part of this place is the Pool and Bar, it%26#39;s in the rear of the hotel and usually they have entertainment. The bar is large and has good food. We like the location the most. It%26#39;s not expensive compared to other ocean front places.
