Safety

I stayed in CHeverly with my husband %26amp; young son - 9 yrs old in 1995, the town looked very quaint and well kept. Once arriving at the Howard Johnson%26#39;s we were told to park our car as close to the reception area as possible under lights, and to make sure we locked our room very well once inside. We went out too pick up a piece we needed for our roof-top luggage container and then eat. We were astonished to find thata there were armed security guards at the store and in fact at the pharmacie as well as the restaurant we ate at. We were very uncomfortable after seeing the shotgun weapons at each commmercial establishment. Just to see the guns up close was scary enough, nevermind think of why they may be necessary. Is it the same still in Cheverly today?

Safety

While Prince George%26#39;s County has it %26#39;s problems, I%26#39;ve never seen ';shotgun weapons at each commercial establishment';....

After 12 years, are you thinking of returning for another visit? There are better areas for tourists...

Safety

Coming in the area as a Tourist, I don%26#39;t see why you would want to stay in Cheverly unless you have relatives/friends that are nearby and you would prefer to be near them.

However, it%26#39;s not as the ';worst'; place in the area. There are several other locations that you can choose that are close/closer to DC that can accommodate your needs. Also usually if it seems too cheap to be true, then you probably don%26#39;t want to stay there anyway.

And since that was 12 years ago, a lot has changed in the area. i.e. that HO JO is a mess. The area is very congested and not very tourist friendly. Actually it%26#39;s not ver local friendly either.

Any reason why you chose that place before? Also what are your specific needs for coming into town, maybe we can help with your hotel decision a little better?

Thanks for your postings. We found ourselves having to stay in Cheverly as we had ddriven straight thru over 18 hours and were so exhausted going any further could have been downright dangerous jin our driving on the road for ourselves as well as any other ddrivers. From the highway about 65 miles before arriving, we booked the room at a rest stop, thus we did not know what to expect. To make one thing clear, I would still go back to Cheverly as I have been to other more dangerous cities and areas. I was just surprised to see the armed guards carrying shotguns -I think that is what really scared us. My son reminded me last evening that even the Dollar type store had an armed guard. The people we met at the restaurant where we ate were very friendly, service was great and we were made to feel comfortable. It was seeing guns so close up that was so disconcerting. The area itself looked very quaint to us, so we were caught off guard. Thank you for writing!
