How bad are the bugs camping beachside in August? Or will the heat be more of a problem? Would we be better to wait until September?
Camping at Assateague Island
If you can go in September, I think it%26#39;s a better time. It is generally less humid and little breezier, which keeps the bugs at bay.
Camping at Assateague Island
it%26#39;s very hard to predict...a lot depends on whether there%26#39;s a breeze or not, and which direction it%26#39;s from. in either case, i%26#39;d strongly recommend a screenhouse to set up around the picnic table.
A screen house not only for the bugs, but also to keep the WILD PONIES out of your food and belongings!
actually, don%26#39;t leave food sitting out in a screenhouse, either...we%26#39;ve seen whole campsites totally trashed by the ponies...tent down %26amp; trampled %26amp; all because the people left the site with chips %26amp; stuff sitting on the picnic table.
If you%26#39;re interested, here%26#39;s a link to some pictures over there. We had ponies on the campsite but they didn%26#39;t bother food. We may have been lucky. We were there in April both times and didn%26#39;t have mosquito problems.
We camped on the bay side, not the beach.
