Best eastern shore beach for young couple getaway?

Please help! We are a late 20’s couple seeking advice on a long weekend beach vacation.

(1) We’re coming from DC and are willing to go anywhere along Virginia coast up to Jersey since they are all about a 3-4 hour drive.

(2) We’d prefer the Ocean over the Bay because we’d like waves.

(3) We’d like a beach that isn’t too crowded. We don’t want beach chairs lined side by side and no room for recreation like Frisbee or kite flying.

(4) That said, we’d like place where we could go to dinner and then out for the evening. We’re worried about trying to avoid a ‘noisy’ beach and ending up somewhere advertised as quiet tipping towards retirement. Nightlife doesn’t have to be on a large scale of Atlantic City (as non-gamblers we actually didn’t like AC) but we’d like some nightlife options.

(5) Here’s the hard one: We’d love to go somewhere where we can stay in a small beach cottage/cabin/bungalow. Ideally we’d love something small and oceanfront. It can be a rent by owner or part of a complex, but we’d prefer standalone, as he is home on a very short stint from overseas, a bit of space and privacy would be nice.

We’d love to finally get some help from real people and not all these internet sites that always say their town’s beach is best for us without knowing our needs. Any beaches you could recommend that fit those qualities and any specific places you can recommend for #5 would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Tough criteria, but I would look into Dewey Beach in Delaware. Stay ocean block but not ocean front. (The view costs way too much).

If the beach is too crouded for your tastes, take a car and drive to one of the state beaches beween Dewey and the Inlet for a bit more space.

I hope you will post what you do if it isn%26#39;t from one of the suggestions. I%26#39;m not sure what you%26#39;re looking for exists at a price I could afford. If it doesn, we%26#39;ll check it out. Since you mentioned kite flying, I%26#39;ll mention one place.

It doesn%26#39;t have #5. It also doesn%26#39;t have a lot of #4. Plenty of good choices for dinner but we%26#39;ve never found much nightlife. It isn%26#39;t a retirement place and they%26#39;re doing a lot of building but not much nightlife yet that I know of.

We like Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. They don%26#39;t have enough parking to really jam up the beaches. Its on the border between Maryland and VA.

Chincoteague is a small island community. They used to be a fishing community but not as much anymore. www.chincoteague.com has listings of realtors and rental properties. You can get some very nice water views but not ocean.

Assateague is the next island out. Its also accessible by car. There are NO accomodations on Assateague. There lots of birds, walking trails and wild ponies. The beach is usually wide. Many times you can fly stunt kites there. You could pretty much always fly single lines.

We%26#39;ve got several pictures from there on our web site. www.AlandSueJohnson.com. Click on Assateague Island, VA in the menu. There are some pictures taken from a camera hanging from a kite. It isn%26#39;t always as empty as some of the pictures might make it look.

It isn%26#39;t what you%26#39;re looking for but it meets some of it.

i wonder if such a place actually even exists....

dewey beach is fine for lots of what you are looking for...

but during the season the beach does get crowded. %26amp; the lifeguards usually stop people from playing with frisbees or flying kites during the day. once the lifeguards are off duty at 5, well...anything goes, almost!

there are stand alone rentals in dewey, but the small ones aren%26#39;t beachfront anymore. i hope you can find someplace that suits you!
