Does anyone know if there is construction on US 301 or if this is the best route to take from Annaopolis towards Richmond (on 7/2)
We will be arriving in Annapolis on 7/1. Can we expect to hit a lot of traffic around the bridge? We will be heading west.
Thanks.
US 301 and Annapolis questions
Re: The bridge on Sunday. A lot depends on the time of day and the weather--westbound traffic will get very heavy beginning in the mid-to-late afternoon, earlier if the weather is bad (weekenders tend to leave the beach earlier if Sunday isn%26#39;t going to be a ';beach day';).
I can%26#39;t speak to 301 on Monday 7/2. With July 4th falling in the middle of the week, it could be in holiday mode--that is to say that *if* there is construction project, they often take a break from it during holiday periods to give the increased holiday traffic a break.
US 301 and Annapolis questions
All that being said, I%26#39;d take 301. You never know what you%26#39;re going to find on the Capital Beltway and 95 southbound, which can crawl 24/7/365. 301 may not move as quickly when all roads are running at full speed, but it is much more direct.
From Annapolis to Richmond there shouldn%26#39;t be any construction. 301 will have a lot of lights especially in the Upper Marlboro/Bowie and then again in Waldorf. July 2 is on a Monday so traffic will be good for getting to Richmond.
Which way are you coming from when you are coming into Annapolis? ON July 1 which is a Sunday if you are coming West Bound it shouldn%26#39;t be too bad. I never experience problems West Bound just East bound on the Bay bridge.
On a Monday headed south on 301, you will be fine. You will hit the usual lights but you shouldn%26#39;t have any big problems. In the summers 301 is at its worse on Friday evenings going south and Sunday evenings going north. Avoid those times.
If you coming down 301S from northern Delaware, you should have no worries until you get close to the Bay Bridge (where 301S merges with 50W). At that point, traffic will be heavy due to beach traffic from the Delware beaches and Ocean City. It does occasionally back-up but since there is no toll westbound, it is usually not too bad.
If you are concerned about traffic as you near the bridge are, I would advise you to leave early (while everyone else will be on the beach). If you make there before noon, you should be fine.
I hate taking 301S to get to Richmond ... I might be in the minority here, but if you can avoid rush hours, I would take the beltway and 95 south.
Actually when I said take 301 to Richmond. I meant to say get back on 95 at split at Kings Dominon. I hate taking 301 all the way into Richmond. It%26#39;s too many lights and you can%26#39;t drive fast enough. Although it%26#39;s nice scenic route.
