Last year we stayed at the Sea Cove Motel (don%26#39;t ever stay there...) which is right at the end of the board walk. When we went out on the beach closer to evening time, 4-5:30pm, these strange biting flies came out and chomped us into the ocean! That%26#39;s the only way we could get away from them.. And after that, it was a mad rush to get our things together and run back to our room. The year before that, we stayed at the Quay Condos and had no problems (but a different time of year..). This year we are staying next door to the Quay at the Golden Sands from July 7-July14. Anyone know when these biting pests come out or if they even come down that far? I associated them with the boardwalk and all the food that gets thrown there, but we were on the opposite end of the boardwalk from all the food.
Biting Flies! Ew..
Depending on the direction the wind is blowing, the number of bugs in certain sections of OC can be a nuissance. For the most part, OC is a pretty bug free place. But when you get very strong winds blowing out of the west or southwest, the winds can actually blow the biting creatures from the swampy areas of the mainland, across the bay and over to the barrier island. I%26#39;m guessing that may be a factor in your experience as well.
Biting Flies! Ew..
OOoh so I guess it doesn%26#39;t matter where in OC you are, huh? I hear the horses get bit pretty badly on Assateague. Poor things.
Yeap, the bugs are horrible on Assateague any time during the warmer months. If you go for a visit, be sure to apply the strongest bug repellant (highest percent DEET) you can find.
We are going to Ocean City this week, just a short hop from NJ. Our biting green-heads don%26#39;t come until later in the summer, but do you think Assateague will be bad now? Should only be barely 70 this week. I%26#39;ve never been there before..........
With the cool spring we have been having and a lack of rain, the bugs on Assateague might not be too bad yet.
Mink, I see you live in MD in Ocean Pines..
Its pretty much always been a dream to live up there in/near Ocean City, its early now for me to be moving, lol, but in a few years it would definitely be nice. What kind of jobs are up there? I%26#39;ve never really explored the town or Worchester (except OC, of course) and coming in all I remember is a little strip mall and a WalMart.
I remember being on the beach one pleasant day in mid-August...it was very crowded. All of a sudden the wind changed to a land breeze and within about 10 minutes, the beach was almost empty. People were kinda dancing and slapping themselves as they made a mad dash off the beach. Would have made a great video!
We have been going to OC for 20 years. We always stay at a condo north of 94th st. We usually go late July, early Aug. I have NEVER experienced any problems with flies or bugs in OC. It is one of the reasons that we continue to come back. That and the great crab cakes!
Lstump,
Sent you a PM.
I%26#39;ve been going to OC for 44 years and have encountered the biting flies a couple times. The locals say when there%26#39;s a storm at sea, these flies come in. They stay for a day or so. Hope they%26#39;re gone when you visit. Good luck
