I am visiting OC in August should be hopefully out of the airport around 3pm is there a good route to OC and how long is it likely to take?
route from washington dullas to OCIf you%26#39;re coming out of Dulles I would take the Dulles Toll road to 495 north. Follow that to Rt 50 East all the way to OC. There is a toll at the Bay bridge ($2). Depending on what day you are arriving the time will vary. Weekday probably 4-5 hrs because rush hour will already be in full swing. If its on the weekend probably 3 1/2 hours as long as it%26#39;s not too busy on the Hwy%26#39;s.
route from washington dullas to OCI%26#39;ve never done the drive from Dulles directly to OC, but I%26#39;ve done the various legs piecemeal at the times you have planned. flattop%26#39;s estimates are probably on the low side--traffic is that bad around Washington and headed across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge ($2.50 toll). During the week, that time of the afternoon is the worst possible time to drive to the beach from Dulles. On a Friday, I%26#39;d be willing to bet you%26#39;re then looking at 6+ hours. Me, I%26#39;d be tempted to wait out traffic in the area around Dulles (good shopping and dining), leaving around 7:30 and making it to the beach around 11:30. Then again, you may have greater tolerance for traffic that simply doesn%26#39;t move and a larger bladder than I was blessed with.
If your plans aren%26#39;t set in stone, flying into Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) airport and leaving from there around 3 pm would avoid the bottlenecks approaching and on the Beltway (495). Those extra 38 miles may not sound like much, but are probably costing you about 2 hours of added driving time during the week, 3 hours on a Friday and perhaps an hour on the weekend versus what you%26#39;ve got planned for Dulles. Traffic really does move that slowly around Washington and out towards the bridge.
You know Tubman, your right. I think I%26#39;m way low on the time estimate. After all last year I left from Falls Church at 1:30 in the afternoon on a Friday. Took us 5 hrs to get there and we are a good 40 min from Dulles (closer in).
Welshgirl, you may actually just want to get a hotel room by Dulles that night and then leave bright and early the next morning.
How definite are your travel plans?
If you could fly into Philadelphia, then you can take a commuter flight to the Salisbury/Ocean City/Wicomico Regional Airport (SBY) which is less than a 30 minute drive to Ocean City. There are rental car agencies at the airport as well.
If that is not an option, then what is your exact travel date? Google Maps provides some of the best driving directions in my opinion.

True, GM is smart, and so is my car%26#39;s GPS unit. But when going to the beach from west of the Chesapeake, it doesn%26#39;t take a rocket scientist or complex navigational algorithm to figure out that there%26#39;s one Bay crossing--three eastbound lanes--for tens of thousands of cars. And a limited number of car-strangled Potomac River crossings before then that must be encountered if you%26#39;re coming from northern Virginia/Dulles.
If GM could somehow whisk me above traffic like George Jetson, or tell me about a secret Bay or Potomac crossing nobody else knows about, I%26#39;d see your point. Until you get across the Bridge, GM%26#39;s directions are no better or worse than my mother-in-law%26#39;s.
Make no mistake--the only real choices and control folks have in getting to the beach are the time they leave and choosing the various alternate routes only after the Bay Bridge is conquered.
thanks I am coming in on a friday, i think i will try to change flights to baltimore or stay a night near dullas. A couple of years ago we came and went to baltimore and the bridge was shut because of an accident so we arrived very late at night. We do not want to drive for to many hours in the dark after a long flight..
I don%26#39;t understand the point of your most recent post tubman.
Friday night...oh my...that is about the worst night to travel if trying to get from western side of the Bay Bridge to the shore points on the east side. Anytime after 5 pm on a Friday and the traffic at the toll booths to get across the Bay Bridge is going to be horrible.
Perhaps as someone else suggested, try getting a hotel room for Friday night near the airport and just get up very early Saturday morning to beat the late morning/early afternoon beach traffic.

The point being tubby, that the OP appears to be from London. Not knowing how familiar she may or may not be with the layout of the roads from Dulles to OC, I suggested using Google Maps as a tool to get a general idea of roads needed to make the journey.
mink,
Sorry, I really didn%26#39;t mean to come off as critical. It%26#39;s a frustrating propostion getting to the beach on a Friday at the height of season or back at the end of the weekend. I%26#39;m still seething from the 7+ hours it took to get home Memorial Day and my apologies if that spilled out into my post. It%26#39;ll all be part of the game until another Chesapeake crossing is built long after I%26#39;ml gone.
So to append my post--one other thing you might be lucky enough to have control over is your starting point. For the OP, switching to Baltimore is huge. Have a safe flight and drive!
