Baltimore Harbor was filthy!

We just returned from an otherwise delightful weekend in the Inner Harbor. The Marriott waterfront was lovely and the weather great. We all really enjoyed Camden Yards and will go back again. Although it was Father’s Day weekend, it was not too crowded.

However, I was truly shocked at the amount of garbage in the water! It looked like every nook and cranny had a kitchen garbage bag dumped. Piles and Piles of garbage!! If you were next to the water you would gag. When the Duck Tour went into the water it had to pass through 10 feet of trash floating next to the shore to get into open water. When the wind blew we had to hold our noses. All of the red buoys meant to hold back the garbage going into the harbor were full. I never seen a dirtier harbor.

We took both the Duck Tour and a Harbor cruise. I would recommend the Duck Tour over the Prince Charming absolutely! The whole point of our taking the 1 hour cruise was to get some narration on so we would learn about what we were looking at but some of the speakers were out and you couldn’t hear much. My husband was sitting forward and could hear better and said the narration was useless because it was running about 10 minutes ahead of our position. The concierge had recommended the water taxi’s instead. Now I know why.

We will definately go back but I hope Baltimore fixes whatever happened to its clean up efforts.

Baltimore Harbor was filthy!

While I have seen garbage in the harbor I have not seen it the way you describe. I know that there are boats that clean up trash from the water.

I also know that the harbor area is just recovering from an algae bloom that killed a lot of fish and left the harbor stinky! The water conditions lately have been less than ideal.

Unfortunately many cities face problems with bad water quality due to all sorts of reasons. I am glad that this didn%26#39;t turn you off from visiting our city in the future.

Baltimore Harbor was filthy!

that%26#39;s not normal.

of course all harbors will have a certain amount of trash in the water...sad but inevitable. but i%26#39;ve never seen it as bad as what you described.

this was addressed on a local talk radio station just a couple days ago %26amp; someone from the city gov. pointed out that there are many streams that flow into the harbor (the jones falls, for one)....and a storm MILES upstream can send a great deal of trash along with it...there are storm booms but they can%26#39;t always handle the volume.

i%26#39;d call it an anomaly....an effort really is made, i%26#39;ve seen the trash collecting boats out there. they do their best.

Like mentioned above, this usually happens right after a big storm when every stream and river in maryland seem to dump into the inner harbor with all of their trash. My guess is that is what happened here. There are tons of ';trash boats'; that are continually scooping up the trash in the harbor.
