Fishing

Check out the site for Oyster Bay Tackle! There are plenty of links there for the DNR and all kinds of helpful info as well as a photo album of what the locals and the visitors catch . Don%26#39;t limit yourself to just bay fishing! There is wonderful surfcasting to be done at Assateague and in Delaware! Lynn at Delmarva sports in West OC is another wealth of info!! Have fun and leave a few for us to catch in September!!!

Offshore Power Boat Races this weekend

Was making small talk to one of our parts suppliers and he mentioned he was going to OC this weekend. I toldd him, whadda ya know me too.

Then he tells me that the boat races are this weekend. So if anyone is down this weekend you%26#39;ll get to hear the roar of the engines.

Should be a crazy weekend : )

Offshore Power Boat Races this weekend

Here%26#39;s some information on the races:

';This year, the boat races will be held on Sunday, June 17. According to Houck, the boats will begin setting-up at Sunset Marina in West Ocean City on June 15 and 16. The race is sponsored by Sunset Marina, as well as Bull on the Beach and Budget Car-Truck Rental.

The course is set up in the ocean from 4th street to 42nd street. Houck explained that there would be two races, with the first race occurring at 12:30 p.m. and the second race occurring around 2-2:30 p.m. In the case of rain, the starting time of the races will be pushed back a few hours. The race will not, however, be postponed until the next day.

Houck said they are expecting around 55 to 60 boats this year. “We have all the world champions from last year coming here.” Houck also referred to the past success of the Bull on the Beach race team. “We also have a boat here, the Bull on the Beach Race Team, and we were world champions in Key West, Florida last year, which gives Ocean City a lot of good advertising.”

  • Good family restaurant

Ok, Taking a trip there in August with 6 hungry teens. Any suggestions for best dinner that willl not break the bank? Should be casual. Staying around 45th if that helps.

    Good family restaurant

Pretty much everything in O.C. is ';casual';--it%26#39;s just a question of what level of casual you%26#39;re looking for--swimwear, cut-off shorts and T-shirt, or ';formal casual';--khakis or nicer shorts and polo shirts.

Tio Gringo%26#39;s (53rd St., bayside) is pretty good Mexican, but haven%26#39;t been in a few years. And you%26#39;re close to Dumser%26#39;s (49th), which is full service but more of a diner-type menu.

Not sure what your ';break the bank'; budget is. I%26#39;d figure on $20pp at Tio%26#39;s, $15pp at Dumser%26#39;s.

Some of the best inexpensive family dinner experiences we%26#39;ve had at the beach (albeit with younger kids) were simply picking up some great takeout and laying out a picnic on the beach, in the shadow of buildings as the sun gets lower and temperatures cool down. Em-ings is great barbecue about 15 minutes out of town in Bishopville. Subs from Billy%26#39;s. Pizza from 3 Brothers. Yum.

One Day Trip to Baltimore, MD

My husband and I are planning a weekend trip to Washington DC and Baltimore. We are planning to leave DC on Saturday evening around 6-7pm and drive to Baltimore and stay there until Sunday evening 4/5pm. Browsing the internet for Baltimore, I%26#39;m leaning towards staying closer to the Harbor. What are the must-see things there? We%26#39;re not at all into Baseball. What is the deal with water taxis? Where do they go?

One Day Trip to Baltimore, MD

Water taxi - www.thewatertaxi.com - the map is on the website. I goes from the inner harbor to historic fells point to canton to fort mchenry.

Closer to the harbor there are many hotel options. It really depends on the budget or the level of service that you want. All the hotels are very nice.

I would plan dinner in little italy...maybe at Amici%26#39;s. Not too pricy and the food is great. If you want crabs, swing by Obryckis. Get a couple drinks at fells point in the evening if that is your thing. Every time I go there in the evening, I just fall in love with it.

On Sunday, go to the Aquarium. I think you can get tickets online at ticket master...you sign up for a time and go. If you are a history nut like me, Ft McHenry is up your alley. Baltimore has great museums: Baltimore Museum of Art, Walters Art Gallery, and American Visionary Art Museum. Check them out online to see who is featuring the most desired artest/art.

Beyond that, I would put on your walking shoes and enjoy all that the city has to offer. It%26#39;s a fun town....for a list of additional things to do, you can check out www.baltimore.org or www.choosemaryland.org for other options.

    Happy travels.

One Day Trip to Baltimore, MD

Look into the Inn at Henderson%26#39;s Wharf if it is in your price range - fantastic hotel, it%26#39;s located on the water in Fells Point. The rooms are beautiful, parking is included as well as a deluxe continental breakfast that is super-nice. I didn%26#39;t find it inconvienent at all to stay in Fells Point, actually, I preferred it to the Inner Harbor area.

If you want to stay right in the Inner Harbor area, I like the Renaissance for quality and convenience. They often have nice packages right through the hotel website that include breakfast.

I also agree that Little Italy is a great place for dinner - I like La Scala. They have great grilled caesar salad, amongst other things. If you wanted to dine right in Fells Point, I ate at John Stevens Ltd the last time I was in Baltimore and the food was very good (mostly seafood options.)

The water taxis are great - they go to such places as the Inner Harbor, Fells Point, Little Italy, the aquarium - all the major stops - check out www.thewatertaxi.com for all the stops, pricing and information.

Have a great time in Baltimore, Charm City is a lot of fun!

    Suzanne

If you don%26#39;t go on a baseball weekend then try priceline for a room. I have got great deals so far this summer on two different weekend trips. The bidding area says downtown and inner harbor but if you choose four star, you will get someplace on the harbor and they are nice hotels.

I ate at Amici%26#39;s for the first time on my last trip to Baltimore and it was wonderful. Big portions and reasonably priced.

If price isn%26#39;t an option go with Henderson%26#39;s Wharf Inn. I think it%26#39;s the best hotel in that area by far. Free parking and bottle of wine. Least it was the last time I stayed there.

Is the Harbor and Fells Point the same thing, just called differently?

They are different areas in downtown Baltimore but very close to one another

    All you can eat Crabs

Can someone tell me the difference and which is better and why of these seafood restaurants:

    Hopperhouse Crab (http://www.hooperscrabhouse.com/)

    Higgins Crab House (http://www.higginscrabhouse.com/)

    Phillips (www.phillipsseafood.com/index.cfm…)

    All you can eat Crabs

Of the three you mention, Phillips has a large buffet that includes crabs. You can%26#39;t go wrong with any of them if it is just crabs that you want to eat.

    All you can eat Crabs

For a crabhouse I would rate the three in this order:

    Hooper%26#39;s

    Higgins

    Phillips

I would also recommend Waterman%26#39;s for all you can eat crabs.

Hooper%26#39;s is West Ocean. It is primarily an all you can eat crab house. The quality of their crabs is usually consistent and above average.

Higgins crabs vary significantly depending on the season. I personally do not like the fact that they serve females when availability is tight.

Phillips has a large buffet that includes steamed crabs. However, their crabs seem overcooked from sitting on the buffet. I usually find much better choices on their buffet than their crabs.

I have to say Phillips gives you the crabs and everything else.

Hopperhouse and Higgins is JUST crabs, maybe chicken thats it...

Phillips give you shrimp, clams, oysters, crawfish, a kids buffet and of course all you can eat crabs.......did I mention a dessert tray....

Hoopers, offers all u can eat crabs, corn on the cob, ribs, chicken, hush puppies, and I think steamed shrimp also! I think it was $25.00 last summer, and it was good food, great service, Never ate at Waterman%26#39;s but heard that%26#39;s good also. Phillips we were disappointed to many times!

Clipper guy was dissappointed at Phillips but I myself never had a bad experience there. Is long as it offers everything you can%26#39;t go wrong with the 3.

Waterman%26#39;s is by far my favorite! I always get delicious full good size crabs with loads of other all-you-can-eat stuff too (corn on the cob, steamed shrimp, fried chicken, fries, hush-puppies).

    Here is their website:

    http://www.watermansseafoodcompany.com/

The specific page from their website about the all-you-can-eat crabs and the prices:

    www.watermansseafoodcompany.com/ayce.htm

Amazing! Not one mention of Crab Alley on Golf Course road! We had wonderful all you can eat crabs there and my wife had steak! Price last fall was $29.00/ person. There are also steamed shrimp, ribs and corn included in that price. The crabs are cooked to order and dumped on your table!!! I%26#39;ve enjoyed the seafood at Phillip%26#39;s, but the crabs always seemed overcooked and dry from the heat lamps. The advantage at Phillips is the variety of seafoods and the raw bar, but if it%26#39;s crabs you want try Crab Alley!

    Biting Flies! Ew..

Last year we stayed at the Sea Cove Motel (don%26#39;t ever stay there...) which is right at the end of the board walk. When we went out on the beach closer to evening time, 4-5:30pm, these strange biting flies came out and chomped us into the ocean! That%26#39;s the only way we could get away from them.. And after that, it was a mad rush to get our things together and run back to our room. The year before that, we stayed at the Quay Condos and had no problems (but a different time of year..). This year we are staying next door to the Quay at the Golden Sands from July 7-July14. Anyone know when these biting pests come out or if they even come down that far? I associated them with the boardwalk and all the food that gets thrown there, but we were on the opposite end of the boardwalk from all the food.

    Biting Flies! Ew..

Depending on the direction the wind is blowing, the number of bugs in certain sections of OC can be a nuissance. For the most part, OC is a pretty bug free place. But when you get very strong winds blowing out of the west or southwest, the winds can actually blow the biting creatures from the swampy areas of the mainland, across the bay and over to the barrier island. I%26#39;m guessing that may be a factor in your experience as well.

    Biting Flies! Ew..

OOoh so I guess it doesn%26#39;t matter where in OC you are, huh? I hear the horses get bit pretty badly on Assateague. Poor things.

Yeap, the bugs are horrible on Assateague any time during the warmer months. If you go for a visit, be sure to apply the strongest bug repellant (highest percent DEET) you can find.

We are going to Ocean City this week, just a short hop from NJ. Our biting green-heads don%26#39;t come until later in the summer, but do you think Assateague will be bad now? Should only be barely 70 this week. I%26#39;ve never been there before..........

With the cool spring we have been having and a lack of rain, the bugs on Assateague might not be too bad yet.

Mink, I see you live in MD in Ocean Pines..

Its pretty much always been a dream to live up there in/near Ocean City, its early now for me to be moving, lol, but in a few years it would definitely be nice. What kind of jobs are up there? I%26#39;ve never really explored the town or Worchester (except OC, of course) and coming in all I remember is a little strip mall and a WalMart.

I remember being on the beach one pleasant day in mid-August...it was very crowded. All of a sudden the wind changed to a land breeze and within about 10 minutes, the beach was almost empty. People were kinda dancing and slapping themselves as they made a mad dash off the beach. Would have made a great video!

We have been going to OC for 20 years. We always stay at a condo north of 94th st. We usually go late July, early Aug. I have NEVER experienced any problems with flies or bugs in OC. It is one of the reasons that we continue to come back. That and the great crab cakes!

    Lstump,

    Sent you a PM.

I%26#39;ve been going to OC for 44 years and have encountered the biting flies a couple times. The locals say when there%26#39;s a storm at sea, these flies come in. They stay for a day or so. Hope they%26#39;re gone when you visit. Good luck

    three days in annapolis

would like to tour annapolis, baltimore inner harbor and the smithsomiae museums in washington dc.can this be done in late late june 26-29.how is parking in baltimore and dc.

    three days in annapolis

Well if you are staying in Annapolis and just wanting to visit Baltimore and DC while there, be aware of traffic. I suggest leaving after rush hour (9:30am). However, parking in DC isn%26#39;t that great after that hour and the traffic is still bad. I would suggest using the Landover Metro Station which is accessible off of Rt. 50 (coming from Annapolis) and just parking your car and catching metro in. However if you had to drive, I would park somewhere near the mall area. There is usually more parking than expected here since there aren%26#39;t that many office buildings as there is further in downtown.

Now don%26#39;t know much about Baltimore but I would assume that it is a little better parking than DC but not much.

It will pretty easy to visit the Smithsonian museums in about 1-2 days. They are all pretty much next to or near each other.

    three days in annapolis

I agree whole heartedly about taking the Metro into DC. When going into DC from Annapolis, I usually go to the New Carrollton Metro station, but the Landover station is also fine. Both are on the same line (orange).

Baltimore is usually a little easier to drive into, but parking can be pricey. I usually take 97 to 695W to 95N to 395 to get into Baltimore. (There is much less traffic and lights than taking 295 which is the most direct route.)

I would post the question about spefic places to park in the Baltimore forum. There are plenty of garages and most are well marked, but I do not know if any are cheaper than others. Everyone that I park in seems to be expensive.

You will not be able to see all of DC in a day, but you should get a taste of what is there. While I am not a fan of DC (due mostly to the traffic, parking, crime, etc), there is plenty to see and do there, much more than Annapolis and Baltimore.

  • Hotels with a View

We stayed at the Renaissance Harbor Place the last time we visited and loved the harbor views and convenience to everything. Thinking about a return later in the summer for our anniversary. Any recommendations for lodging with similar or better views while still within walking distance to attractions and outstanding dining? Thanks for your help!

    Hotels with a View

That%26#39;s one of the best places in town....while others have good views I%26#39;m not sure they%26#39;re as nice of a property as the Rennaissance.

Harbor Court (Intercontinental) and Marriott Waterfront would be worth looking into, as would the Sheraton and the Hyatt. But check the reviews....

    Hotels with a View

I know I keep recommending it, but the Henderson%26#39;s Wharf Inn has great views of the water in Fells Point. We went for our anniversary and it was excellent, perfect place for an anniversary. The reviews here do not lie. I%26#39;d book a waterfront room if one is available. Walking distance to dozens of restaurants or a quick water taxi ride away. We walked to Inner harbor w/o issue, but loved taking the water taxi as well. Trust me, it is great (and no, I do not work for them!)

    Suzanne

I%26#39;ve only stayed at 3 hotels in the harbor area but Henderson%26#39;s is the best out of them all. In fact Henderson%26#39;s is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. I don%26#39;t know if the view will be as good but it has a great location and wonderful accomodations. I just recently stayed at the Marriott Waterfront and was very impressed with the view. The location there is good too. Next to water taxi stop and walking distance to Little Italy, Inner Harbor and Fell%26#39;s Point. I am staying at the Harborplace next weekend so I will be able to compare views then.

    Tommy,

The Marriott Waterfront will have the biggest views. Perched on the eastern edge of the Inner Harbor...and WAY taller than any other hotel in the area...That is the good news...

The location is fine...walkable to all attractions...but the hotel continues to get mixed reviews, mostly due to the price/value ratio.

Henderson%26#39;s Wharf does have some water view rooms...and they are ground level...it is the best hotel in town...and the Fells Point location is good...although not the best for the Inner Harbor...it is great for Little Italy and Fells Point/Canton

We took the majority opinion and reserved at Hendersons Wharf. Looking forward to exploring Fells Point and Little Italy which we did not do last time. Thanks to all who responded to the posting.

  • O.C. for week of July 4th???

Can anyone please tell me what to expect for the week of July 4th? We are going and staying on the boardwalk. I hear it will be crowded, any tips? I%26#39;ll have a 7 yr. old with me. Thanks!

O.C. for week of July 4th???

It will be unbelievably crowded. Its the busiest time of year there. Get on the beach early if you want a spot. It will also be pretty hot. They shoot fireworks off though right off the boardwalk so enjoy. Other than that plan on doing everything a little earlier to avoid the crowds!

O.C. for week of July 4th???

If you are watching the fireworks on the boardwalk or on the beach at the boardwalk, when they are over make sure you hang on tight to your 7 year old because you will hardly be able to squeeze through to get to where you are going. The crowd is unbelievable.

    internet cafe at the boardwalk?

does anyone know of an internet cafe on th boardwalk on a connection while on the beach?

    internet cafe at the boardwalk?

Don%26#39;t think there%26#39;s a cafe, but there%26#39;s free public wi-fi along Somerset St. that extends to the beach.

    http://www.town.ocean-city.md.us/wifi.html

    Maryland

    A great state to visit!

    Maryland

can you elaborate? it almost sounds like the old ';great place to visit, but i wouldn%26#39;t want to live there'; LOL

i love my state very much %26amp; think it%26#39;s probably one of the most under-rated places in the country! ';america in miniature'; indeed!

    i have an internet friend from maine who had never been in maryland at ALL till two years ago, when she drove through the western maryland mountains enroute to ohio...she wrote to me ';i always thought of maryland as a %26#39;hum-drum%26#39; sort of place but the scenery on that road was INCREDIBLE!!!';

and of course she never saw the beauty of the rest of the state!

also, my best friend%26#39;s husband (californian born %26amp; raised) resisted coming for a visit for years...he%26#39;d been to pittsburgh once %26amp; actually said ';the east coast has nothing to offer me'; LOL....since then he%26#39;s seen western maryland, the eastern shore %26amp; assateague, not to mention the green rolling hills of carroll, frederick %26amp; baltimore counties....he%26#39;s a convert!

route from washington dullas to OC

I am visiting OC in August should be hopefully out of the airport around 3pm is there a good route to OC and how long is it likely to take?

route from washington dullas to OC

If you%26#39;re coming out of Dulles I would take the Dulles Toll road to 495 north. Follow that to Rt 50 East all the way to OC. There is a toll at the Bay bridge ($2). Depending on what day you are arriving the time will vary. Weekday probably 4-5 hrs because rush hour will already be in full swing. If its on the weekend probably 3 1/2 hours as long as it%26#39;s not too busy on the Hwy%26#39;s.

route from washington dullas to OC

I%26#39;ve never done the drive from Dulles directly to OC, but I%26#39;ve done the various legs piecemeal at the times you have planned. flattop%26#39;s estimates are probably on the low side--traffic is that bad around Washington and headed across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge ($2.50 toll). During the week, that time of the afternoon is the worst possible time to drive to the beach from Dulles. On a Friday, I%26#39;d be willing to bet you%26#39;re then looking at 6+ hours. Me, I%26#39;d be tempted to wait out traffic in the area around Dulles (good shopping and dining), leaving around 7:30 and making it to the beach around 11:30. Then again, you may have greater tolerance for traffic that simply doesn%26#39;t move and a larger bladder than I was blessed with.

If your plans aren%26#39;t set in stone, flying into Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) airport and leaving from there around 3 pm would avoid the bottlenecks approaching and on the Beltway (495). Those extra 38 miles may not sound like much, but are probably costing you about 2 hours of added driving time during the week, 3 hours on a Friday and perhaps an hour on the weekend versus what you%26#39;ve got planned for Dulles. Traffic really does move that slowly around Washington and out towards the bridge.

You know Tubman, your right. I think I%26#39;m way low on the time estimate. After all last year I left from Falls Church at 1:30 in the afternoon on a Friday. Took us 5 hrs to get there and we are a good 40 min from Dulles (closer in).

Welshgirl, you may actually just want to get a hotel room by Dulles that night and then leave bright and early the next morning.

How definite are your travel plans?

If you could fly into Philadelphia, then you can take a commuter flight to the Salisbury/Ocean City/Wicomico Regional Airport (SBY) which is less than a 30 minute drive to Ocean City. There are rental car agencies at the airport as well.

If that is not an option, then what is your exact travel date? Google Maps provides some of the best driving directions in my opinion.

**Google Maps provides some of the best driving directions in my opinion.**

True, GM is smart, and so is my car%26#39;s GPS unit. But when going to the beach from west of the Chesapeake, it doesn%26#39;t take a rocket scientist or complex navigational algorithm to figure out that there%26#39;s one Bay crossing--three eastbound lanes--for tens of thousands of cars. And a limited number of car-strangled Potomac River crossings before then that must be encountered if you%26#39;re coming from northern Virginia/Dulles.

If GM could somehow whisk me above traffic like George Jetson, or tell me about a secret Bay or Potomac crossing nobody else knows about, I%26#39;d see your point. Until you get across the Bridge, GM%26#39;s directions are no better or worse than my mother-in-law%26#39;s.

Make no mistake--the only real choices and control folks have in getting to the beach are the time they leave and choosing the various alternate routes only after the Bay Bridge is conquered.

thanks I am coming in on a friday, i think i will try to change flights to baltimore or stay a night near dullas. A couple of years ago we came and went to baltimore and the bridge was shut because of an accident so we arrived very late at night. We do not want to drive for to many hours in the dark after a long flight..

I don%26#39;t understand the point of your most recent post tubman.

Friday night...oh my...that is about the worst night to travel if trying to get from western side of the Bay Bridge to the shore points on the east side. Anytime after 5 pm on a Friday and the traffic at the toll booths to get across the Bay Bridge is going to be horrible.

Perhaps as someone else suggested, try getting a hotel room for Friday night near the airport and just get up very early Saturday morning to beat the late morning/early afternoon beach traffic.

**If GM could somehow whisk me above traffic like George Jetson, or tell me about a secret Bay or Potomac crossing nobody else knows about, I%26#39;d see your point.**

The point being tubby, that the OP appears to be from London. Not knowing how familiar she may or may not be with the layout of the roads from Dulles to OC, I suggested using Google Maps as a tool to get a general idea of roads needed to make the journey.

    mink,

Sorry, I really didn%26#39;t mean to come off as critical. It%26#39;s a frustrating propostion getting to the beach on a Friday at the height of season or back at the end of the weekend. I%26#39;m still seething from the 7+ hours it took to get home Memorial Day and my apologies if that spilled out into my post. It%26#39;ll all be part of the game until another Chesapeake crossing is built long after I%26#39;ml gone.

So to append my post--one other thing you might be lucky enough to have control over is your starting point. For the OP, switching to Baltimore is huge. Have a safe flight and drive!

  • A nice Hotel for four nights from the inlet to 40th?

Hello, I am searching for a nice oceanfront hotel to stay at in Ocean City, MD for the last weekend in July. There will be 3 adults and one child. I would like to stay somewhere roughly between the inlet and 40th street. I haven%26#39;t been to OC in 8-9 years and previously we have only stayed from Saturday to Saturday at the Sea Gate (on 30th), so I really have no idea where would be a good place for only four nights.

Also, can you give me an idea of how much to expect to spend per night?

    Thanks!

A nice Hotel for four nights from the inlet to 40th?

Here is a link to OC has to offer to help you:

    Link: http://www.ocean-city.com/

last weekend in July ocean front room, your looking at $200-300 a night easily.

A nice Hotel for four nights from the inlet to 40th?

tfunky, thanks for the reply! I will check out that site you mentioned. 200-300 per night is ok, I just don%26#39;t want to go much higher than 300-350 per night.

We stayed on 25th street at the Crystal Beach Hotel. It%26#39;s right on the boardwalk, has a small oceanfront pool. It%26#39;s considered the quiet end of the boardwalk, but restaurants, shops, rides, mini golf are all within walking distance. www.ocean-city.com is a good place to start your search. We stayed at Crystal Beach the first year they were open, it was very nice, clean, we had great service. Not sure of the price now, sorry. Have fun.

Read the reviews here - there is some great info. I have stayed at Tidelands Caribbean, which sounds like it would fit your needs - it is clean and comfy, and should be in the right price range.

    Hotel OCeanfront with Kids pool

Is there a hotel that is Oceanfront with possibly a kids pool and with a young 2 1/2 yeard old in mind?

    Thanks.

    SJ

    Hotel OCeanfront with Kids pool

The Holiday Inn and Suites at boardwalk and 17th st has a kids pool and an adult (or bigger kids) pool. They have a few things for the kids to crawl around on too in the pool.

    Hotel OCeanfront with Kids pool

Flattop - thanks for the reply and info.

    Greatly appreciate.

Holiday Inn on 17th looks great for the kids, just during July its super pricey..

Any other kid friendly with maybe a fun kids pool that would be a bit cheaper in July then the Holiday Inn on 17th street?

    Thanks again.

July is top price season in OC. I know the Days Inn on 22nd street has a kiddy pool, go to www.ocean-city.com or ococean.com. There is a lot of info on those sites about OC. Good luck and have fun

The Beachmark hotel has the best pool in OC, in my opinion - it is up a bit from the boardwalk, and the decor is a little outdated - but it is clean and comfy, the staff are friendly, and it can be nice to be a bit away from the boardwalk.

  • OC condo with flexible stay dates

I am planning on traveling to Ocean City, MD for mid-September. I usually go for one week with family during that month each year, but this year%26#39;s plan is going to have to be different. My family and I are not available to get there until 9/17 (unless I would go by myself). This is a Monday, and we want to stay for one full week. We definitely want to go during Sun Fest, so the week we%26#39;re looking at is 9/17 until 9/24. Has anyone rented a condo in OC beginning on a week day, or has anyone looked into this and not been able to find anything? Any suggestions on 2 bedroom suite hotels is appreciated (but I don%26#39;t want to get into $400 a night, when a condo during Sept. is generally $500-$1000).

I have emailed a few realtors to see what is possible, but thought I would ask about this here, too.

Thanks for reading, and for any help!

OC condo with flexible stay dates

Sorry, no specifics, but in addition to putting your request in with a few realtors, I%26#39;d put something on Craigslist. Condo owners that are firm about the Saturday or Sunday weekly rental cycle in season are more flexible in the off-season. Most start renting and pricing by the weekend to match changing demand that time of year and those units are often empty during the week.

So look for properties renting for the weekend of 9/21-9/23. When you get some results, find out if the property is also available for the weekdays preceding (17-20) and day after (24); if it is, you%26#39;ll likely be able to negotiate a good deal for the additional days. Or book a condo for the weekend, and take advantage of the off-season weekday rates at a hotel to fill in the gap.

Thank you so much! I%26#39;ve been emailing condo owners and rental agents like crazy - but getting some good ideas.

    Ocean City Web Cam

    http://www.kiteloft.com/webcam/

Check out this web cam for great views of the boardwalk and ocean. It%26#39;s located on top of The Kite Loft between 5th and 6th streets. We stay at the Comfort Inn and have a great time watching the people that know the camera is there waving to their friends at home. One guy even held his DOG up to have it wave to the camera!

    Ocean City Web Cam

Also try www.oceancitycam.com. It%26#39;s on the boards outside of Marty%26#39;s playland.

    Ocean City Web Cam

I am familiar with one ones mentioned - but my NEW favorite is Harrison Watch Web Cam because it%26#39;s a live feed and you can see the movement of people, the ferris wheel and the ocean waves - the only thing missing is SOUND - maybe next year! Next favorite is the web cam that goes 360 degress on Carolina and Boardwalk. It%26#39;s called the Carolina St. Web Cam. ENJOY!

do u have the Harrisons beach cam link?

    thanx :)

its a really cool cam, u can move it and zoom as well!! amaze!!

Whatever you do Don%26#39;t Break It!!!!!

    OMG

I ca n%26#39;t believe I found you on here........

We stay up a little farther than you do. I sure hope we can get together some time when were there and catch up on things...

Take care,,, nice picture.. do you have someone professional do them????

    who r u talking too???, lol :)

This is a pretty good one, out of the Ocean Gallery - - -

    http://www.oceangallery.com/cam-big.asp

A good close-up of the boardwalk with the Ferris Wheel in the distant background. It sometimes does not immediately come up for me - but if I keep it on the screen, after a few minutes it will start to show the picture.

Here%26#39;s the link for the Caroline Street webcam - - -

    http://www.ococean.com/webcam.html

I had a ton of problems getting this one up - I keep getting the ';Cannot display webpage'; screen. It%26#39;s kind of hit or miss to get the pic up, but once you do, it%26#39;s really cool since it%26#39;s 360!

  • Any recs for a restaurant for wedding anniversary?

    Like to hear what you suggest and why. 50th wedding anniversary, the the couple is %26#39;older.%26#39;

    Thanks in advance!

Any recs for a restaurant for wedding anniversary?

    Dear Drive or Fly

I%26#39;m not the biggest expert for dining in OC but here is my recomendations:

    I love Harrisons Harbor Watch

great view, great service and great food

and can be very romantic being surounded by water on 3 sides

I hear tons about Antipasti and seen them on the Food Network

The owner actually kisses all the women as he greets them

and I hear the food is excellent

now on the other hand if its not been a happy 50 years than I suggest

    Paul Revere LOL

Sure there will be many other suggestions and hope for 50 more

    Phill

Any recs for a restaurant for wedding anniversary?

Now I haven%26#39;t personally been there but I hear that Reflections is one of the nicest restaurants in OC.

I have really enjoyed Fagers Island in the past. It%26#39;s bayside and has a great view of the sunset.

IMHO, the most romantic restaurant in the OC ';area'; is the Lighthouse Sound Restaurant located just across the first span of the Rt. 90 bridge. It has awesome views of condo row and the rest of the OC skyline from across the bay. Food is great albeit pricey, but you get what you pay for.

    www.lighthousesound.com/restaurant.html

If you want to stay in OC, then Reflections is very nice also, it just doesn%26#39;t have any breath-taking views.

The ';fine dining'; side of Fager%26#39;s Island is another great suggestion. They also have a ';light-fare'; area, so make sure you distinguish between the two.

Harrison%26#39;s Harbor Watch is nice too.

A lot of people rave about Nantucket%26#39;s just across the MD/DE line in Fenwick Island. Personally, I%26#39;ve never been there, but have always heard very good things about it.

If you%26#39;re in the mood for something quirky and unique, Grove Market, inland off the Rt. 90 bridge, is an experience the anniversary couple won%26#39;t soon forget. Very small--perhaps 6 or 7 tables inside and out of a converted small grocery. Cheap resin plastic chairs and tables, mismatched plates. No printed menus, your server will read you what they have that day. Wine is stored in the converted deli case. If you want a drink, you get up and pick it up out of the commercial drink cooler. No view (unless you count a small trailer park).

As unappealing and ';no-frills'; as some of this may sound, it actually works when you put it all together and with the friendly and accomodating staff. It was by far the best meal I%26#39;ve ever had on the Eastern Shore.

Cash only, reservations a must. 410-352-5055.

    tubman,

There you went and let the cat out of the bag! That place is the real ';seacret'; in the OC area. Now, we%26#39;ll never be able to get a reservation! ;)

As tubman described, some of the best and freshest food you%26#39;ll taste in the OC area can be had at The Grove Market. Definitely need a reservation any time of the year.

Thank you all! These are good suggestion for them and I%26#39;m definately going to check out a few the next time we are down there!!!

    Appreciate it!!

Do any of these restaurants cater? Looking for a good restaurant to cater a wedding shower...

anything left to do Aug25-Sep 1

We%26#39;re taking a trip to OC the last week of Aug. I have received literature from the chamber, etc... I am noticing that the special events (free shows, etc..) end the week before we arrive. Is the beach still ';hopping'; that week or is it dead? Is the weather usually still nice then? Are the rides still open? Can we still find places for all you can eat crabs? Thanks to anyone who can ease my mind.

anything left to do Aug25-Sep 1

everything will be ';hopping'; till at least after labor day, for sure! the weather will be hot, the water will be just beginning to warm up (it%26#39;s actually at its warmest in late sept.-early october)....

%26amp; i answered your ';drinks on the beach'; question in the other post too.....put your cocktail in a sports bottle. not sexy....but safe.

anything left to do Aug25-Sep 1

We always travel down for Sunfest and stay on after for about a week! Less crowded, and the crabs are still cooking! Most of the time the weather is beautiful and there are few, if any waits. Some of the food at buffet restaurants is not as good due to smaller crowds and less frequent(fresher) replenishment of the foods. A lot of the boardwalk stuff is still open, and there are lots of after season sales everywhere! Room rates drop also! If you enjoy fishing or just beach walking, this time of year is best!!

    Hotel or condos with efficiencies

How small are the golden sand efficiencies and how do they compare with the effieciencies at High point south?

    Hotel or condos with efficiencies

efficiencies at GS are pretty small. never saw them at high point.

your better off getting a one bedroom. there%26#39;s more space and the bedroom is seperate and the kitchens are bigger.

  • Is this hotel still there

Hi everyone, I haven%26#39;t been to Ocean CIty in about 7 years but we are thinking of returning this year so as not to spend as much on gas to get to VB or MB. Just wondering about a certain hotel that I had always wanted to stay in/ Okay hope I can describe this right. I don%26#39;t know the street number but as you are driving down Atlantic ave it ends and curves out onto Coastal Hwy. In that corner there was hotel and it was painted pink I think it was a Ramada(Icould be wrong on that one). Does anyone know if it is still there and what kind of hotel is it?

Also does anyone know where I can find a list of hotels by street number.

Thanks for an info you can give me.

    Is this hotel still there

From your details sounds to me like you are talking about the Spinaker Hotel.

It is right on the corner where you turn to go out onto the Coastal Highway.

It is still there and gets good reviews for location and other areas.

I will post a site that allows you to search by street number.

    Is this hotel still there

The hotel you are thinking of is the Quality Inn Beachfront on 33rd Street. It is still there but the Ramada Limited next door has since been replaced by the new Hilton. See http://www.qualityinnandsuitesoceancity.com or choicehotels.com/ires/en-US/html/HotelInfo… for more info about this hotel.

    One nite stay ?

I used to know of the hotels that would let you stay for one nite on the weekends but my mind is going blank.

Does anyone know of any hotels that don%26#39;t have the 2 or 3 nite minimums during the summers. Kinda want to do a very last minute trip down to OC this weekend. Kinda surprise the wife a little.

    One nite stay ?

Usually the results returned by the major search engines (Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, etc.) will address your request for one night...returning properties which can be rented and telling you the ones that require a minimum stay. So simply put your request in there.

Expedia just returned the Carousel %26amp; Coconut Malorie for one night this weekend.

    One nite stay ?

Thanks for the quick reply tubman

Well, I called the Coconut Mallory but they have a 2 night min. But the lady was very helpful and told me to call 1800ococean and they could tell me who might have rooms.

After 5 min on the phone got an ocean front room for $209.00 at the Dunes Manor on 28th st for Sat nite.

Then it was just a matter of calling the lovely Mrs Flattop and ';letting'; her know we were going to the beach. She said a-okay and now life is all good,.

I see Seacrets in my future.

Just to let you know, we were able to book one night stays at both The Edge and the Lighthouse Club. They will work with you if they have the availability. We are two couples celebrating special occasions this Friday the 22nd.

I need some listings that would allow a small dog.

Week of August 12th thru 16th (maybe)

Need Motels , Hotels that allow dogs

The Serene Inn on 120th street, ocean block allows dogs. Not sure of the accomodations though. It came under new ownership a few years ago and they redid some of the rooms, but not sure how nice the rooms are.

Need Motels , Hotels that allow dogs

I have a post out here for the same thing. We have found the Safari Inn, but no one has replied to my post about how nice it is.

The Barefoot Mailman - Not fancy, but clean and comfy, and they love pets - when you walk in the lobby, the walls are postered with pictures of former 4 legged guests.

I agree with the Barefoot Mailman and think that it would be your best bet.

check your dog in at the dogtel motel

i think i saw a brochure of that..unless thats not a real place

Parrot Lagoon on 5th St. accepts pets and they have a pool!

    Activities for kids

I have 2 boys, ages 3 1/2 and 1 year. We%26#39;re visiting Easton later this month. Are there any parks, beaches, trails or other activities around there?

    Activities for kids

Best bet is the Pickering Creek Audobon Preserve, outside of Easton. A great place to take kids, lots of trails, etc.

    Bay Bridge Airport

Hey everyone.. I work at an Airport in Va, small general aircraft.. A famous pilot named Nancy Lynn crashed at our airport in October and ended up dying because of injuries (she was absolutely AMAZING.. and one of the ONLY females int he aerobatic community). Her home base was Bay Bridge Airport. How far away is this from OC? Anyone ever been? Definitely not trying to mention I%26#39;m from Culpeper, because then EVERYONE will know and it would be uncomfortable. Just kinda wanna watch the other aerobatic planes take off from there, maybe meet her son, Pete. Wondering if Ocean City Municipal is the same and has two different names?

    Bay Bridge Airport

nope....bay bridge airport is on kent island, right by the eastern side of the chespeake bay bridge.

it%26#39;s about an hour %26amp; a half i%26#39;d say from OC.

google it %26amp; you can probably get an exact time.

    Bay Bridge Airport

I think Bay Bridge airport is in Stevensville, MD

yes, well...stevensville is ON kent island

Beach, rides for family ISO long weekend

Your suggestions would be appreciated in accomplishing a get-away in June/July:

    1) a MD beach or boardwalk area that has rides and/or sufficient diversions for children, ages 6-8

    2) safe and reasonably quiet enough to sleep at night for a family with small children

    3) able to rent for 3 nights (can%26#39;t stay a whole week)

    Thanks for any ideas!

Beach, rides for family ISO long weekend

There are only two options in Maryland if you%26#39;re looking for an ocean beach.

The shoreline of Maryland consists entirely of two beaches: Ocean City, which is totally commercial, and Assateague, a national and state park which is without any commerce whatsoever.

Given the choice of the two, it looks like you%26#39;ll be headed for OC. Lots of hotels that will rent to you for 3 nights, not just weekly condos. Look to the northern end of town for a ';quieter'; experience at night, with plenty to do for the kids (albeit further from the Boardwalk attractions).

    http://www.ococean.com

    If you%26#39;re looking for more variety in beach options, the Delaware coast has five beaches (Fenwick Island, Bethany, Dewey, Rehoboth, Lewes), each with its own ';personality.';

Beach, rides for family ISO long weekend

tubman, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

There are also inland beaches up and down the bay. If you would like to get absorbed inhistory or Chesapeake bay life, this is the place to go. Point Lookout State Park at the South end of St. Mary%26#39;s county is a public owned beach area at the mouth of the Potomac river, there are also several beach areas in Calvert County.

Point Lookout is the former site of a confederate war camp and has a Lighthouse at the Southern most part of the county and a museum with activities for children. Point Lookout is only a short distance to Historic St. Mary%26#39;s City and a replica of the Dove that offers tours and rides on occasion. St. Mary%26#39;s County is loaded with the old and the new with Historic sites dotted throughout the landscape. Piney Point Lighthouse with it%26#39;s museum on the St. Mary%26#39;s side and the operational Cove Point Lighthouse on the Calvert side are two examples.

Also nearby is Solomon%26#39;s Island is maybe one of the better places to stay with children. There are lots of activities in a fairly short driving distance. You can go hunting for shark%26#39;s teeth at Calvert Cliff%26#39;s State Park, enjoy some great crab cakes at Stoney%26#39;s on Broomes Island, or visit the Calvert Marine Museum that caters to children and teaches about the bay and the life of the watermen and the boatbuilders who settled in the area.

In between St. Mary%26#39;s City and Solomon%26#39;s is the town of Lexington Park Maryland which is home to the Patuxent River Air Museum where the family can learn about the early days of Navy flight including the local Navy test Pilot%26#39;s schools ties to the early days of NASA to the modern day Joint Strike Fighter aircraft.

All of the things I mentioned are within 30-45 minutes driving time so ideally somewhere in the middle where you can access them all is best. There are numerous hotels in the area of Solomon%26#39;s, California and Lexington Park areas and I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the rates you find.

    Best of luck!

P.S. You might also check out the North Beach Area in Northern Calvert/Anne Arundel County. I haven%26#39;t been there since before the hurricane came through so don%26#39;t know what has been rebuilt since then. They also had amusement park and boardwalk atmosthere. To me the area was reminicent of Coney Island or old Atlantic City.

We are going to go to the John Hopkins and this is the hotel we are using this hotel...as they have a free shuttle to the hospital. Is the area of the hotel safe?

We are also looking for something to do as a cruise tour in the area in the early morning and all we are finding is 11am start times and we have to be at the airport by 1pm..

    Thanks

    best western on Odonnell street

In all fairness, I%26#39;ve never stayed, but have stopped at the travel plaza where the hotel is located fairly often and picked someone up from the bus station there.

The reviews of the hotel here on TA are fairly mixed. The area around the hotel offers nothing to see for a tourist and may seem sketchy--the bus station and the docks nearby attract a certain type of character at times--but reality is that you%26#39;ll probably find it to be a safe, if unattractive place to stay.

If you view this as a place to park your head for the night and the shuttle operates as reliably as it%26#39;s supposed to, you probably won%26#39;t be disappointed. If you%26#39;re expecting to find lots of fun things to do in the neighborhood, you%26#39;ll want to stay somewhere else.

Does this bus stop that you mention have a shuttle to the airport located at the bus stop??

We are there about 48 hours...2 nights

I understand there is a dinner theatre there on the hotel, called Tobys?? any insight into the dinner theatre

    Thanks

The bus stop is primarily a Greyhound/Trailways station, but it%26#39;s also a frequently-used pickup point for charter buses. I can%26#39;t speak to a specific regularly-scheduled shuttle to the airport, but I%26#39;m sure the hotel can give you that information.

Toby%26#39;s is an offshoot of a dinner theatre that has been in the suburbs for many years and I can only speak to the suburban location by saying it was one of the better dinner theatre experiences I%26#39;ve had (albeit a few years ago).

If you find yourself stuck at the hotel without transportation in the evening looking for an entertainment fix, your only alternatives (given the surrounding neighborhood) are TV in your room or Toby%26#39;s. Hope that helps put things into perspective.

May I ask where to focus our hotel search?

Would like to have some sort of ';entertainement'; albeit not looking to party...just maybe a mall or a walking area

    Thanks

As I said we are needing to stay relatively near John Hopkins

There is a Holiday Inn Express on Russell Street, is that a better location??

we did stay at the other holiday inn in January(on Lombard)..

    Sheraton Baltimore Center??

    Thanks for your assistance

If distance is an issue, the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront and nearby Courtyard Baltimore Downtown Inner Harbor are about as close as you%26#39;ll find (1 mile) to the hospital. They%26#39;re in a much nicer, pedestrian-friendly area with amenities. Easy walk to the heart of the popular Inner Harbor and Fells Point from either.

These and other hotels towards the Harbor will likely be more expensive than the Best Western, but if you%26#39;re looking for something to do other than hanging out in your hotel room during your time away from the hospital, I think you%26#39;ll find they%26#39;re well worth it.

    Mother's Cantina

So we go to OC for a quick weekend getaway. Of course it was cloudy and overcast on Sat. Finally got to see the sun around 3:30 but it was time to head to Seacrets so no laying in the sun for us.

Enjoyed Seacrets as usual and listened to Jim Long butcher most of the songs but that%26#39;s half the fun.

Decided we had enough fun at Seacrets and headed for the bus stop. !st bus too full, 2nd bus too full.... walked to hotel at 28th st

By now we have worked up a real thirst. Took a peak into Coins but it was packed. As we walked along I notice an empty bar called Mother%26#39;s Cantina. Basically had the place to ourselves and enjoyed a few more cold ones. They have a restaurant attached so we ordered some food to go. Got the beef quesadillas and 2 oders of their sante fe rolls. Very very good. The place is your basic watering hole, has a few tv%26#39;s and the bartender was really nice.

So if you%26#39;re looking to get away from the crowds you may want to check this place out. http://www.motherscantina.com/index.html

It%26#39;s located at 28th st and Coastal Hwy.

    Mother's Cantina

How was Secrets? I never make it there until a few hours into miller time and a drunk bus ride down. Is it worth going during for say Happy Hour?

Trying to find some HH places near 72st or wherever. Ill try out Mothers Cntina if down in that area.

    Mother's Cantina

We always enjoy Seacrets. But at the same time we go during the day and into early evening. Once the sun goes down it gets just too crowded for us. The drink specials always seem to be something that I don%26#39;t drink but it doesn%26#39;t really matter to much because we figure we%26#39;re on some sort of vacation and the price doesn%26#39;t really bother us.

Now I will say that if you%26#39;re gonna buy a t-shirt or something, do it before you start drinking. There%26#39;s nothing like drunk shopping...I know, my wallet was $140.00 lighter after picking up 2 sweatshirts, and 4 shirts....ouch!

Golden Sands vs High Point South

We are deciding between a 1 bedroom or an efficiency at the G.S. The one bedroom is on the 3rd floor and the effeciency is on the 5th or 8th. My questions are:

    how small are the efficiencys?

is the 3rd floor too low to see the ocean?

how small is the pool? (looks like the condo complex holds a lot of people)

Are there enough chairs at the pool to accomodate all the people?

We are also looking at High Point south efficiencys. Would they be larger?

We are just a couple in our 40%26#39;s, no kids going with us this time, which is the better choice?

Golden Sands vs High Point South

I%26#39;ve stayed at Hipoint South many times. I have always stayed in a privately owned unit. You have a good view of the ocean from any floor although the best views seem to be from flrs. 5 and 6. I have always had at least a one bedroom and found it to be roomy. They have large balconies which end up serving as living room and dining room. The pool is adequate. Chairs are usually available, weekends are busier and you might want to grab one early.

Where can the best seafood in OC be found?

    Any suggestions?

Where can the best seafood in OC be found?

    There%26#39;s a few ,I mean ALOT! Harpoon Hanna%26#39;s,Hoopers,Harborside, Macky%26#39;s, just to name a few

Where can the best seafood in OC be found?

My family loves Phillips. We usually go there at least twice during our week.

Try Crab Alley on Golf Course rd! Great AYCE crabs cooked to order with steamed shrimp, corn and ribs! Buffets at Phillips and the Bonfire are good, Embers, not so much!

Everybody here seems to mention just about all the seafood places in OC, making me believe most places are pretty good. But if I had to place my choices in order it would be:

    Phillips

    Embers

    Halls

    Mug and Mallet (crabs only)

    Higgins

MR Ducks has an awesome crabcake sandwich. I know Mink has mentioned many times that Bahama Mamas has the best jumbo crabs in OC.

I ate at Phillips%26#39; on the 10th and while eating my meal I thought I was at home eating one of their selections out of my grocery store%26#39;s freezer. Good at home, disappointing at the actual place.

Any of the other places listed, Bahama Mamas, would be a better choice.

The Captain%26#39;s Galley II in West Ocean City has fresh seafood, including outstanding crab cakes. We have been eating there the last couple of years and would highly recommend it over Phillip%26#39;s any day.

Can anyone recommend where I can buy seafood that I can cook?

There is a place over in west ocean city by the Captian%26#39;s Galley that sells fresh seafood that you can make yourself.

The prices are reasonable and they catch their own seafood.

A good seafood place in OC is actually in West OC. Waterman%26#39;s is one of the best places to have all you can eat crabs!

    And Higgins is good too!

I tried doing some searching for you. There really isn%26#39;t a booze cruise per say but I did find this www.delmarvanow.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article…

It mentions that the Angler has a free cruise in the evening if you buy dinner. They do serve drinks while on the cruise.

As far a college folks....... no shortage. Cehc out the Party Block on 17th st. - it has 3 different bars and can get pretty wild.

    Booze Cruises

I kinda remember going on a ';jamaican theme'; sunset cruise about 5 years ago that served alcohol. I was wondering if this is still around or if anyone has ever heard of this? Thanks.

That might have been one of Seacrets Booze cruises. DJ Batman also has had cruises in the past.

I just talked to my dad and he said that the cruise I was thinking about was a ';Jamaican Sunset Cruise'; that docked at Shannytown, but he said Shannytown is no longer there. Thanks anyways.

  • Sightseeing in Washington DC

My wife and I are going to drive to Washington DC for a day while we are in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We want to see a few things like the Smithsonian and the Veterans Memorial. What is the best way to approach driving? I have heard traffic is a nightmare and parking is worse!

    Sightseeing in Washington DC

The best way to approach driving coming from the Blue Ridge is to simply do it on the weekend, when traffic and parking are both easily accomplished. During the week, it%26#39;s as bad as you describe.

If, however, you want to go during the week, I%26#39;d strongly recommend taking the MARC commuter train to Union Station (from Martinsburg or Harper%26#39;s Ferry, WV) so you don%26#39;t have to deal with traffic and parking.

    http://www.mtamaryland.com/services/marc/

    Sightseeing in Washington DC

You%26#39;re coming from Virginia into Washington DC and you posted your question on the Maryland forum? :)

You may want to post it on the DC forum or Virginia, and what day of the week would this be on?

Actually it%26#39;s not totally out of line, if you%26#39;re starting out in the West Virginia panhandle. Most of your trip to DC and your traffic tieups during the week will be in Maryland if you rely on the online mapping services.

    BWI offsite parking

I have a 7:15 am flight out of Bwi. Seems like there are 2-3 offiste parking lots with shuttles to the terminals. Would appreciate any feedback as to which one is better.

    BWI offsite parking

Are you looking for a satellite lot operated by the airport or one of the private companies that charges less?

I can%26#39;t speak to the airport%26#39;s lots. We usually use the private lots, which charge less. We found Pre-Flight to be the best, with the most frequent shuttles between the lot and the airport.

We went with a different lot (EconoPark Express) last month just to do something different, and wound up waiting 15 minutes for their shuttle at the airport while 3 Pre-Flight shuttles went by.

    BWI offsite parking

Thanks. I really appreciate it. We will try Pre-Flight.

fastpark is excellent also. we always use it...and all of my husband%26#39;s co-workers (all frequent business flyers) do as well.

BWI is not like parking at PHL or DCA. Parking is cheaper, easily accessible, and generally more available.

I suggest taking a look at

    bwiairport.com/directions_parking/…

They have been advertising the Express Parking for $9.00/day special on the radio. I also do the $10.00 garage parking. It is a relatively new garage.

I use Preflight fairly often. Good service. They have discount coupons on their website, brings the price down to 7 bucks a day...

Hotel needed (but i'm not driving)

    Hi there

I%26#39;m looking for a central Baltimore hotel/B%26amp;B at the beginning of July as i%26#39;m not driving in the city I need somewhere thats got shops, restaurants within walking distance.

I like areas that might be classed as historic / studenty or not so chic! Can i do this on less than $120 a night? I%26#39;m not that bothered about the Inner Harbour but it might be useful to be on a bus/underground/tram route.

Any help would be gratefully received..Cheers

Hotel needed (but i'm not driving)

You could try the Admiral Fell Inn or Celie%26#39;s Bed and breakfast in Fells Point.

    Baltimore Harbor was filthy!

We just returned from an otherwise delightful weekend in the Inner Harbor. The Marriott waterfront was lovely and the weather great. We all really enjoyed Camden Yards and will go back again. Although it was Father’s Day weekend, it was not too crowded.

However, I was truly shocked at the amount of garbage in the water! It looked like every nook and cranny had a kitchen garbage bag dumped. Piles and Piles of garbage!! If you were next to the water you would gag. When the Duck Tour went into the water it had to pass through 10 feet of trash floating next to the shore to get into open water. When the wind blew we had to hold our noses. All of the red buoys meant to hold back the garbage going into the harbor were full. I never seen a dirtier harbor.

We took both the Duck Tour and a Harbor cruise. I would recommend the Duck Tour over the Prince Charming absolutely! The whole point of our taking the 1 hour cruise was to get some narration on so we would learn about what we were looking at but some of the speakers were out and you couldn’t hear much. My husband was sitting forward and could hear better and said the narration was useless because it was running about 10 minutes ahead of our position. The concierge had recommended the water taxi’s instead. Now I know why.

We will definately go back but I hope Baltimore fixes whatever happened to its clean up efforts.

    Baltimore Harbor was filthy!

While I have seen garbage in the harbor I have not seen it the way you describe. I know that there are boats that clean up trash from the water.

I also know that the harbor area is just recovering from an algae bloom that killed a lot of fish and left the harbor stinky! The water conditions lately have been less than ideal.

    wjz.com/seenon/local_story_156152558.html

Unfortunately many cities face problems with bad water quality due to all sorts of reasons. I am glad that this didn%26#39;t turn you off from visiting our city in the future.

    Baltimore Harbor was filthy!

    that%26#39;s not normal.

of course all harbors will have a certain amount of trash in the water...sad but inevitable. but i%26#39;ve never seen it as bad as what you described.

this was addressed on a local talk radio station just a couple days ago %26amp; someone from the city gov. pointed out that there are many streams that flow into the harbor (the jones falls, for one)....and a storm MILES upstream can send a great deal of trash along with it...there are storm booms but they can%26#39;t always handle the volume.

i%26#39;d call it an anomaly....an effort really is made, i%26#39;ve seen the trash collecting boats out there. they do their best.

Like mentioned above, this usually happens right after a big storm when every stream and river in maryland seem to dump into the inner harbor with all of their trash. My guess is that is what happened here. There are tons of ';trash boats'; that are continually scooping up the trash in the harbor.

    Restaurants with outdoor dining

Can anyone suggest some restaurants that have outdoor dining?

Especially in the Inner Harbor area.

    Thanks so much.

    Restaurants with outdoor dining

Wow. Here we go: Legal Seafood, Phillips, Capital Grill, Pizzaria Uno, Cheesecake factory, Rusty Scupper, Hard Rock Cafe, Babalu Grill, Mondo Cafe, etc. There are so many options.

I like the ones in Power Plant Live. I would actually suggest Babalu Grill (cuban food). The place is owned by a Baltimore restauranteur and the experience is upscale with cool ambiance.

    Hope this helps.

    Restaurants with outdoor dining

I think McCormick and Schmick%26#39;s in the Inner Harbor has a gorgeous outdoor dining area- esp at sunset- and the food is really good for what I consider ';tourist food'; (ie *anything* in the Inner Harbor)

  • Our visit Saturday

My son and I are coming on a bus trip Saturday around 10. I would like to know where I should go first for some coupons, brochures before venturing off... I hate to find out we could have saved on admissions after the fact.

We will be going to :

    The Visionary Museum

    Geppis Entertainment Mueseum

    Maritime Museum

    USS Constellation

Would still like to go to Oriole Park for a tour, that is probably not going to happen it is on the bottom of my son%26#39;s list and will probably not have time.

We will probably eat at Fell%26#39;s Point

We will definately get the pass for the Water Taxi (all day $8?), I want to make sure that this is worth it with what is on our itinerary.

I want to be relaxed, not rushed and have a good time, so I want to be organized.

Thanks again, everyone and I will post my reviews on Sunday.

    Our visit Saturday

you need to go to the Baltimore Visitors center in the Inner Harbor for brochures and coupons. There is actually a donwloadble coupon booklet on their web site here:

  • Best hotel to stay with children

Ok, I am looking for the best and most awesome kid-friendly hotel. I am looking for a place with a large pool and activities for the children. I VA beach, one of the hotels has a lazy river for the kids and I like that idea a lot. Any suggestions?

    Thank you.

Best hotel to stay with children

    What%26#39;s your price range?

If price is no problem then the new Hilton or the the Holiday Inn on 17th St. would be your two best choices for hotels that have kids%26#39; activities pools. Both get excellent ratings here on TA. The one advantage of the Holiday Inn is that it is located on the boardwalk which extends north to 27th St. The Hilton is located on 32nd St. Most of the restaurants, shops, activities and amusement rides on the boardwalk start around 5th St. and extend south to the inlet.

Best hotel to stay with children

Well, I didn%26#39;t want to pay more than $300 a night and both of those hotels are over 400 so I guess they are not an option. There were 2 that I came across last night -

    1. Quality Inn Beachfront looks pretty fun. Unfortunately they have new owners effective 1/16 so we can%26#39;t reserve until then - and not to mention there%26#39;s no telling what the rates will be.

    2. Francis Scott Key Family Resort - while this is not on the beach (we really did want oceanfront though), it looks very family oriented and they have a free shuttle to take you to and from the beach/boardwalk. I dont know how much of a pain that will be though.

    Any thoughts?

    Thank you.

I would recommend the Castle in the Sands for being on the ocean and activities

I would not recommend the Francis Scott Key, esp with kids. Not only is not oceanfront, it is right on Rt 50, [ the main road into OC } , and quite a distance away from the boardwalk, and water.

I agree with Anga, you will not want to be on Rt 50 at the Francis Scott Key Inn.....too far from the beach. What a hassle to take the shuttle and then be caught up in OC traffic coming back from the beach.

I would suggest hotels on the boards and the ones with pools. I%26#39;m not familar with any that has special kids activities, but if your on the boards you can get on the boardwalk or hit the pool many times a day to keep the kids busy. I%26#39;ve stayed at the Tidelands on 5th, very large rooms, clean with a rooftop and lower level pool. Lower level pool has resturant and bar right there. Plus being on 5th st puts you near all the activities on the boardwalk.

The FSK Resort is the place for families. I%26#39;ve stayed there and had no problems driving to town or with the shuttle. It%26#39;s difficult getting a room at this place because it%26#39;s so popular. CHeck out their website and see for yourself. I%26#39;m going back in August.

No activities for the kids, but we love The Grand. Its right on the quiet part of the board, close to the bike rental place, and close to the tram down to the pier for rides.

    Best Cream of crab soup?

any suggestions on who has a really good cream of crab soup ( I like it thick)

    Best Cream of crab soup?

Harrison%26#39;s Harbor Watch at the inlet is pretty good.

What do ';you'; bring to Ocean City?

Besides clothing items what are some things you bring on your vacation to OC. This list might help others in terms of things they might have otherwise forgot. I certainly pay the price for eating what ever I want down there and look forward to a few great meals but I do cut corners and save a lot by bringing my own drinks and snacks.

So what kind of drinks and snacks do you all bring?

Its amazing the price of alcohol down there In some cases double the price

ok so now its your turn

    Looking forward to your replies

    Phill

What do ';you'; bring to Ocean City?

    beer

    chips/pretzels

    beer

    sunscreen

    beer

    beach towels

    beer

    walking shoes

    beer

    camera

    and don%26#39;t forget beer...

What do ';you'; bring to Ocean City?

    Tfunky sounds like my list

I think this year to make more room for beer and drinks I will not pack sunscreen. I will put beer on me instead and see if that works. Ask a cop to put some on my back lol

Have to bring my pretzels and chips because I%26#39;m a salt nut

    Phill

While we are on the subject of beer, I once watch an 18 year old try and drink 100 beers in 3 days down at Ocean City. I never seen someone waste 3 days at the beach like he did. He sat there with a blanket on in 90 degree weather with his beer bong. It was a sight to see.Too bad for him, he quit after 92. What a quitter.

I like to bring some Absolut vodka down and mix it with some orange gatorade.

Just curiuos? How much is a case of Miller Lite down there anyway?

If you shop around you can find good deals on beer but it%26#39;s hard to drive around for that special deal and wait and wait and wait till you find it. I tend to get my first case at the 7-eleven when I get into OC then when I see a special I%26#39;ll stock up for the week,

I always buy my beer down there. The beer store in the Gold Coast Mall is reasonably priced. I have never found there prices to be anywhere near double the normal price. Although, limes tend to be expensive there, so stop at the Superfresh first. All prices at 7- Eleven are double what they should be anyway...

    p b %26amp; j

    bacon %26amp; eggs

    lots of water

    beer

not a snack but most important is my pillow from home

When we come down with the kids we stay in the Grand for a 4 night trip. I try and eat breakfast (except the occassional trip to Fractured Prune) and lunches in the room, well on the deck, and dinners out. I%26#39;ll pack one small cooler with some things and bring a bag of dry stuff. Here is what I am bringing:

    Food:

Bisquick Shake N Pour Pancake Mix (I have one of those large griddles you just plug into the wall)

    butter/syrup

    Bread

Velveeta Cheese (for grilled cheese sandwiches)

    Ham (Grilled Ham and Cheese)

    Homemade Brownies and Smores Cookies

    PBJ

    Cut up fruit and veggies

    Ranch Dip/Homade French Onion Dip

    Chips

    Ring Bologna/Cheese/Crackers/Mustard

I also bring plastic utensils, paper plates, trash bags (for our sandy wet stuff)

And lots of Yuengling Lagers! :)

I hate packing for the beach.. LOL

    Beach chairs

    Umbrealla

    Sunblock

Swimsuits and clothes of course and towels

    Beer

FOOD!! (chips, dip, cheese, bread, pb and j, veggies)

We usually try to eat in for breakfast and lunch (or on the beach we just snack) and eat out at night. Whether its ordering in pizza or subs, chinese, or going out to eat at Ember%26#39;s, Phillips, etc. If we%26#39;re just too lazy to make anything for breakfast, we usually eat any leftover pizza or just go to McDonalds. Just like home! LOL

Get beer/liquor before you go down. We are in Delaware and go to Costco where it%26#39;s way cheaper. When I was in OC a few weeks ago, I paid $26 for a 30 pack of Coors Light---was not happy!!!

To the beach I take water, sodas, juice, individual bags of snacks, and an occassional stop at Quiznos for a sandwich. Or I%26#39;ll make a sandwich at the condo before I leave.

We also take our own breakfast food and eat in--I hate lines for breakfast when I%26#39;m on vacation.

    hilton

We are planning a July trip and the Hilton looks like the nicest place so far. The price is quite high, is it worth it? Are there any other hotel similar but less expensive? We like an updated hotel, resort style pool area and very clean. Please let me know what fits this or is the hilton the only one. It really is pricey. Thanks for the help.

    hilton

The Hilton is the newest large scale hotel in OC....it is upscale with great pools. With this, drives the price. It is not on the boardwalk...it is about 6-8 blocks up the beach from the end of the boardwalk.

Other very nice upscale hotels, though not as new, include the Holiday Inn near 17th street and the Dunes Manor.

    hilton

We stayed at the Hilton 2 weeks ago and it is really nice. We were able to get one of the end king suites. Decor is great. Bathroom is great. View is great. Pool is great. The price is really high but you are getting what you pay. If the price keeps you from enjoying the rest of your stay it is not worth it though.

    I meant to say ';getting what you pay for.';

pretty much anything on the boadwalk is pricy this time of the year. If you wish to cut cost you%26#39;ll need to look off boardwalk or bayside. Mid June to Labor day you cold pay 225 -300 a night. Try: oceancity.com

and seach hotels you might be able to find something you like.

The Hilton rooms are very nice, but I don%26#39;t think the services are worth the price.

I stayed last year after they opened and had a number of issues, specifically, SECURITY!!!!

Upon checkout my bill was left outside of my door, FACE UP with all of my identifying information.

Further, parking was awful at night. There were numerous locals parking in the Hilton garage. They were not even staying at the facility. There were people changing in the garage!!!

The breakfast at the restaurant had awful service as well. We waited FOREVER for basically cereal and fruit.

My suggestion is to beware the overpriced season with this hotel.

Maybe the Princess Royale? From what I remember, it had a resort style to it with a large pool area, hot tubs, outdoor %26amp; indoor bars, etc. But I haven%26#39;t been there in years so I%26#39;m not sure if it%26#39;s changed much since then.

Thank you for your input everyone! From all your advice I decided to book the Hilton and bite the bullet!! It%26#39;s $459 per night but it%26#39;s better than a bad stay at a cheap hotel, that can ruin the entire vacation. They do not even accept AAA discount or any others. If any one knows any other discount sites please let me know. I tried all the known ones...Expedia, cheap tickets, etc.

  • Annapolis Kid Friendly Restaurant

We are going for a day trip to Annapolis with another family. Between both families we will have 5 kids ranging in age from 3 to 7. What are some options for dinner that will give us adults the opportunity to enjoy a good meal but remains kid friendly.

    Thanks!

    Annapolis Kid Friendly Restaurant

In Annapolis, we have the typically kid friendly chains: Chuck Cheese, Fudruckers, Applebees, Tuesdays, Fridays, Baja Fresh, Five Guys (best burgers in town), etc. But I kinda got the impression that this was not what you were looking for.

Non-chain choices might include Adam’s Ribs, Buddy’s (although a tourist trap it is very kid friendly – free under 12, I think), 3 Brothers – Italian / Pizza, Ledo’s Pizza, Mike’s Crabhouse, and Chis’s Charcoal Pit. There are probably some others but those come to mind first.

    Annapolis Kid Friendly Restaurant

Thank you for the suggestions. Yes, we would like to stay away from the chains. A great local spot that is kid friendly would be ideal!

My kids like The Melting Pot, a fondue restaurant, even though it%26#39;s a chain. Red, Hot %26amp; Blue for BBQ, just over the Severn, is kid-friendly (i.e., noisy). A great local place that has picnic tables outside, in Edgewater, is Davis%26#39; Pub. Good travels!

Toro Bravo, on West Street, is a great place to go with kids; it%26#39;s been under renovation for a few months but is supposed to re-open the end of June. We always go to Riordan%26#39;s, opposite the Market, when our cousins are here with their three kids- it%26#39;s a bar, but it has a kid%26#39;s menu and the staff is very child-friendly. (great crab soup, also). 49 West, a coffee house on West Street, is also very good; they have waffles, bagels, sandwiches, etc. They%26#39;re open from about 7 am through midnight.

Some people will tell you that Chick and Ruth%26#39;s Deli is a good choice- I%26#39;m a native New Yorker, and believe me, it%26#39;s no delicatessen. Skip it.

Even though Buddy%26#39;s is not my personal favorite I think it would be the perfect choice for you. Kids love it and you%26#39;ll have a view of the City Dock if you can get a table by the window. Their prices are very reasonable and the restaurant is right in the heart of all the action. Not a chain restaurant at all! The only problem might be finding a parking place so just head for the parking garage. After you eat you can walk around the Historic District. It%26#39;s a fun town.

    Weekend in Baltimore...Orioles Game

Traveling to Baltimore for two Orioles games this weekend. Staying near the park. Need a couple of choices for restaurants and sports bars. If you can help that would be great.

    Weekend in Baltimore...Orioles Game

Pickles, Sliders, and Wharf Rat are the best of the pre-game bars....Wharf Rat has the best food, by far...Pickles and Sliders are a better bar option.

I%26#39;d go to Wharf Rat first and if it isn%26#39;t ';happening'; enough for you, go over to the others.

    Weekend in Baltimore...Orioles Game

Max%26#39;s on Broadway is also another good choice:

  • Two Days Inner harbor!

Will be arriving Friday afternoon and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for things to do before diner. Not so much history and aquariums, but activities. Someone mentioned paddle boats before? Something along those lines. We will be attending a convention on Saturday, but if we had sometime for attractions we are looking for something cheap and exciting. Last but not least, we are looking for a nice outside restaurant that won%26#39;t burn holes in our pockets. Thanks!!

    Two Days Inner harbor!

There are paddle boats in the Inner Harbor, but I don%26#39;t know how much they cost. If you really want cheap- I%26#39;d walk up Charles St. to the Walters Art Museum- it%26#39;s free. There%26#39;s really not too much to do in the inner harbor area that is inexpensive. Walking up to Mt Vernon or over to Federal Hill or Fells Point is probably the most entertaining thing you can do for cheaply.

    Two Days Inner harbor!

Isn%26#39;t there a duck tour? The tour where the vehicle drives on the road and then becomes a boat in the water? That sounds like fun.

I looked it up to be sure and here is the web address:

    http://www.baltimoreducks.com/experience-fun/

yeah, but the duck tour isn%26#39;t cheap IMHO... $24!

    Inner Harbor Area MUST SEE's

I will be staying in the inner harbor area for a weekend the end of the month and wanted to know what I must see. I already have tickets for an Orioles game Sat night. Need recommendations on what to do Saturday morning, before the ballgame.

    Inner Harbor Area MUST SEE's

Impossible to answer without knowing your likes and dislikes...take a look at the ';Baltimore Attractions'; tab on the left side of the page here for some ideas...

    Inner Harbor Area MUST SEE's

you might enjoy the babe ruth birthplace %26amp; sports legends at camden yards museums...holding a ticket for the game that day, you%26#39;d get a small discount on your admission.

there%26#39;s also steve geppi%26#39;s ';museum of entertainment'; at the ballpark as well.

lots of other stuff in the area...what do you enjoy besides baseball?

Fort McHenry is a good place to get outside and see something different. Short taxi ride from the IH area.

Aquarium is pretty good. Walking distance from the IH area.

B%26amp;O Railroad Museum if you%26#39;re into that sort of thing.

And the Sports Museum at OPACY as well as the Babe Ruth museum just a few blocks from the stadium.

There isn%26#39;t a lot of MUST SEE stuff in Baltimore, but there are a lot of fun things to do and see in the area.

If you%26#39;ve never been to the Inner Harbor, then just walking around the harbor is nice and will take some time. The aquarium is awesome, but gets very crowded on weekends and I would recommend getting tickets ahead of time. The dolphin show there is fun too. Finally, although there are a lot of great restaurants at Inner Harbor, if you walk a couple blocks behind The Aquarium, you%26#39;ll hit Little Italy. Great italian restaurants or go to Vaccarro%26#39;s for dessert. Have fun! If you like peanuts in the shell, buy them from the people selling them outside the stadium and bring them in the park.

Check out Fell%26#39;s Point, too. I love going down there for dinner and drinks.

what do you think is a great restaurant in Fells Point?

    Kali%26#39;s Court.

    http://www.kaliscourt.net/

I liked John Steven and Pazo.

    Suzanne

Peter%26#39;s Inn, folks.That%26#39;s the best in Fells Point.

    http://www.petersinn.com/

shhh, charmcity...don%26#39;t say that TOO loud or my favorite place will become WAY too crowded (Just kidding, kind of - it%26#39;s one of my favorite restaurants in the city!! :)

    Cheap Day-Parking in Baltimore

    Hi,

I would be visiting Baltimore this sunday. I would be driving from Bethesda,MD and would like to park my car near inner harbour/aquarium during the day. Late evening I would be driving to Bethlehem,PA at my friend%26#39;s place.

So any good/cheap places to park near attractions in Baltimore?

    TIA

    Cheap Day-Parking in Baltimore

There aren%26#39;t any. All of the parking in the inner harbor area is ridiculously expensive because there is a shortage. The best you%26#39;ll be able to do is find metered parking somewhere in the business district up from the harbor- but good luck with that!

Have you thought about parking at a light rail station somewhere and taking the light rail downtown?

You could also park in the garage in Fells Point and take the water taxi over to the inner harbor (but the water taxi costs $8, so that might blow your savings right there!) Fells Point is also a 15 min walk from the inner harbor, so you could walk it.

    Cheap Day-Parking in Baltimore

Sunday%26#39;s don%26#39;t have the same rates as during the business week.

We just went on Sunday and it was $5.00 all day parking up until I believe 6 pm.

There are several garages and parking lots. We parked at an open parking lot on Baltimore street. It%26#39;s by Central Parking. It%26#39;s exactly 4 blocks walking down to the inner harbor. Also as we walked down we saw several garages that costs no more than $7.00 all day. Most were about $6.50. As you drive on Pratt Street and drive up any of the streets accross/adjacent from the harbor you will see several of them.

Thanks a lot for the advice! Yeah, you are right, there aren%26#39;t any cheap parking areas. All are around $18. Fells Point garage is $3 for the whole Sunday, so seems a great deal. I will walk to the nearby attractions as I have 3 more ppl with me, so water-taxi would be too costly for me.

  • Reasonable priced and clean hotel

Hi, my best friend and I are looking to come to Ocean City for the week of Sept 10 and need a clean %26amp; safe hotel at a reasonable price (around $100 per nite). We blew the rest of our money in Vegas in October. Just looking for a decent hotel near the ocean.

    Thanks!!!

For as much as we use our room I booked the Beachmark in August during their prime season for $140 a night.

They are suppossed to have the biggest pool area in OC as well, but your choices should be endless at that time of year with all the kids going back to school and its after their high season.

We never spend too much time in the room anyway since the bars are open till 4 so this fit us perfect. I looked real quick and its $60 weekday, $95 for weekend or $455 for week for that time of year.

Sept 10 the room rates for hotels on the boardwalk are pretty good. Park Place,Tidelands and the Commander Hotel come to mind. The Commander has an indoor pool in case of bad weather but is located on 14th st, a little down from the main action which is near the inlet which the two other hotels I mentioned are. Check Oceancity.com

Econo Lodge 146st/Oceanside, check out my other posts, I have given a review on my thoughts of this place.

    Park Place on 3rd

    $105 week

    $165 weekend

Thanks for your help! This will be my first trip to OC and am looking forward to it... I am sure I will have more questions as it comes closer to the trip.
